WeatherSafeAlerts

Private alerts. No account.

A free iPhone app that relays the weather service's warnings for the places you choose. Tell it where home, work and family are, and it tells you what is coming, where, until when, and what to do.

How it works

Warnings for the places you choose

  • Pick up to ten places

Home, work, a parent's house. Your phone rounds each one to an area about 2 km across before it is sent. The exact spot stays on your phone.

  • The relay watches the weather service

Our server checks the weather service for warnings in those areas and sends the ones you asked to hear about.

  • Encrypted for your phone

Each alert is encrypted on our server to a key only your phone holds, so Apple's push service carries it without being able to read it. Your phone unlocks it and keeps the history.

Four plain words

You know the stakes before the sentence

Every alert starts with one of four labels. Each has its own word, shape and color, so any one of them tells you which it is.

  • Heads up

Possible later. Nothing to do yet.

Heads up: storms are possible this evening around Work. Nothing to do yet.

  • Get ready

Likely soon. Make a plan now.

Get ready: the weather service has a tornado watch for Mom's House until 9 PM. Know where you would go.

  • Act now

Happening or about to. Do the thing.

Act now: the weather service has a tornado warning for your area until 6:45 PM. Get to the lowest floor, away from windows.

  • All clear

An ended warning gets an All clear only when nothing else is active for that place. If something is still active, you get an update naming it.

All clear: the tornado warning for Home has ended. No other warnings are active.

Privacy

What the relay knows, said once and kept

Your exact location stays on your phone. The relay only knows which areas to watch, not who you are. We do not track you, we do not collect data to sell, and we do not share anything with advertisers or data brokers. To decide which warnings to send, our server holds the rounded areas for your places, your alert choices, and the details it needs to reach your phone. There is no account, email or phone number, and nothing in the app is there to track you. Records you stop renewing are removed after about 30 days (details in the privacy policy), and Delete my data in the app removes them sooner.

Honest about its limits

What it cannot promise

WeatherSafeAlerts relays warnings as fast as it can. Phones, networks, and weather do not always cooperate. Keep a second way to hear warnings, like a weather radio.

  • An alert can be late or never arrive, for example when the phone is off, has no signal, or a service along the way is down.
  • Nearby-storm alerts are the app's own estimates of distance and arrival time, worked out from weather service warnings. They can be wrong.
  • The government alerts your iPhone gets on its own, such as Wireless Emergency Alerts (Settings, Notifications, Government Alerts), are separate from this app. Leave them on.
  • Warnings come from the National Weather Service. WeatherSafeAlerts is not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Weather Service, NOAA or FEMA.
